The Idea

We will send a local artist into P.S. 273 in Brooklyn to do a workshop with students who do not have adequate access to art education. The workshop will focus on Surrealist art and comic-book making. These fun activities foster group work and individual creativity, and offer vital art education.

The Specifics

The costs involved in this workshop include a stipend for the instructor, transportation to and from the school and materials. In this case, materials include about 400 pages of paper, pencils, markers, erasers and more. Transportation will have to be via car due to the necessity of carrying enough materials for about 250 kids. In addition, any extranneous funds can be applied to organizational costs like documenting the workshop, hiring assistants for the teaching artist and eventually applying for grants so we can continue to offer in-school workshops like this one. Our Visiting Artists Program offers arts education in communities that need it most, and its continuation depends on the success of these first workshops.

It should be noted that this is one workshop in a series, this contest can cover the cost of about 1.5 days for our program...but every penny counts! And we had to cut this series short due to budgetary constraints, so we'd love to see the program grow and reach more students.

That may be a little ambitious for us right now - but we do partner with many organizations that work nationally, so if you're ever curious about what's available in your area you can always email us at uproarart@gmail.com

We sure hope so, this summer we're doing our first major fund-raising effort to expand our operational budget. We hope to offer more long-term in school workshops and maybe an afterschool, and to send our visiting artists further afield.

An apt comment. It's a shame that not every school has art education.

I second that. For too long, public schools (and some private!) have not given enough attention to quality art education.

As a child, I loved Surrealist art. I hope other kids can learn to love it, too!

I remember how eye-opening learning about the history of art was for me, back in elementary school. It's what inspired me to become a cartoonist myself.

Learning, as a kid, about Manet and Van Gogh, and other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, inspired me to become a pianist, as crazy as that sounds. I wanted to create sounds for what I saw. It was only with Art Education that I could do that!

Wow, what wonderful stories. This is why this contest is so interesting.

Yes, I think one of the great things about this particular program is that it brings working artists themselves into the school - imagine how powerful it is for these kids to see someone working as a successful creative professional - it goes so far beyond books! Though it must be said that the history of art is crucial to education as well.

NYC public schools are losing art programs left and right, this program will help support arts even in schools without any art programming at all. Let them have art!

I wish we could stem this tide of anti-art education legislation. In the meantime, such programs provide much needed art ed for students who don't have access.
