The Idea

DON’T HATE ME BECAUSE I’M BEAUTIFUL is a PUBLIC ART AWARENESS CAMPAIGN that challenges cultural stereotypes about urban youth whist also bringing young people in touch with their personal truth and all the glorious ways they are beautiful.

The Specifics

Youth will work with multi media artist Kirthi Nath to develop a series of PUBLIC POSTERS for display at San Francisco’s 16th Street/Mission BART station, along with a collection of SHORT STORIES, that share fresh perspectives from which to connect with and celebrate young people. These new messages will be developed with youth in a process that is experiential and opens up a terrain of rich self-discovery and exciting creative empowerment. GRANT MONEY WILL PAY FOR PRINTING POSTERS. Exhibiting the posters in public allows youth to not only have a voice but to participate in important conversations, in this case, about celebrating personal strengths and standing up to hate and negative stereotyping.

Dynamic and ripe with possibility! I feel sure that seeing this project at the entrance to 16th Street BART would bring hope, reflection, and new perspectives to many a traveler.

thank you for your support, and for all the work you've done to help make inroads for young people to be in touch with their truth and help drive these important conversations. when i work with youth, i still show videos you helped produce with youth (i feel free when!).
